LaTeX Oddity

I use LaTeX for just about every document I produce. The only time I ever use evil MS software to produce documents is when it is essentially forced on me by other people. Maybe hippietrekx uses LaTeX now also; I don't know. Among the functions of LaTeX is (really the main function) is the arrangeme...

:=D: Since you are going to München, let's say "Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum PhD!" After all the hard work, I find I'm not too sure how to be bored now. I was sitting at my desk this afternoon when it was over and before I went out to celebrate and just started editing my next publication be...

Re: President Donald J. Trump

I'm going to take a somewhat different spin on the discussion on democracy. The founders of the US were deeply distrustful of democracy, and went to considerable lengths to protect the future Americans from democracy. These protections have been weakened somewhat over time, as the US government has ...

I would think it would be a boon in many things. The solution to a constrained optimisation problem cannot be better than the solution to an unconstrained optimisation problem.

Re: Another craze run its course?

meanwhile my own theory is that when a food trend makes it to McDonald's, it has run its course. And just a few days ago, I see McDonald's has added kale to their menu. Hopefully it will now fade away. No more kale chips in the snack aisle. No more quinoa with kale - in the handy steamer pouch - in...

Re: Another craze run its course?

There is a similar but opposite trend too; the one where things are bad for you. Eggs were bad for you for a while, but now they're good and healthy again. Beef was too. I can't wait for gluten to go back to just being a protein. So all the eggs I ate back when they were bad, were they still bad fo...

Re: IRU's Flag Counter

Mactep, does that correspond with your number of visits here? Or perhaps the number of different IP addresses you may have visited from? Could be. These days, I have two laptops (one used constantly, one used rarely), five desktops (two used often, one used rarely, two never used), three phones (on...

Re: Guess what the Graph Shows!

Are the time units months? Yes, they are. And for what it is worth, the months begin and end in the time zone where I am located most of the time (UTC+8). If I did the graph according to your time zone, it would probably change, but not very much. ETA: Lies told by Donald Trump? If you look careful...

For what it's worth, I created the graph myself from the source data. It may not be quite as slick as it would be if it were pulled from Der Spiegel.

Re: Guess what the Graph Shows!

To me, the form of the "curve" would suggest a time-dpenedent quantitiy: Somthing that has low numbers for a long time, with ups and down, sometimes shrinking to zero, and then exploding onto the scene at the end. But the numbers on the x-axis don't suggest time as the independent variabl...

Re: President Donald J. Trump

Considering the very visible incompetence of the president, I don't think any of the qualified individuals will suffer. I would have guessed that, if you get fired on some matter of principle, it might actually be a career booster. I'd say this did not happen in the case of Archibald Cox though; he...

Re: President Donald J. Trump

What kind of failure rate are we having on Trump appointees? Are they concentrated in specific areas? The question that occurs to me is, if you take a job in the Trump administration, and it ends up being rocky, with your dismissal a short time later, is this damaging to your future career? (Going b...
