Haggis Sophia As a byzantinist I have to applaud your link of my national dish with the Mother Church . The most impressive thing about it is not the dome and main area, you expect that; it is the size of the galleries which are the showstopper. And let's not forget that the minarets are 500 years ...

A renaissance man resigns.

The leader of the Liberal Democrat Party (wishy washy, hand wringing, liberal with a small "l") has resigned. Menzies Campbell was an olympic sprint finalist, and a QC (lawyer at the highest courts) before becoming a politician. Self made with no family money or connections to help him. It...

Atonement

Has anyone seen the new film Atonement? The film version of the Ian McEwan book? I'm curious how they rated a film where most people smoke most of the time and the word "cunt" appears in 6 foot high letters on the screen (several times).

There are a lot of dubious statements in there, mixed with hyperbole. But then what do I know, I just live in awe of the US economy and wish I had it as good as any American.

In the UK the term was usually used as short-hand for lower taxes, not necessarily for economic reasons but for the political reason that individuals spend more effectively and wisely than governments. I don't remember Reagan being unpopular here, certainly not as unpopular as GWB; of course we had ...

As of this morning we have a law criminalising kerb crawling. Which is fine, except it isn't an offence if you are on foot. And prostitution is illegal, but that law isn't enforced. And criminalising the clients might drive it further underground and put the women in more danger. And Aberdeen has a ...

Yeah, we're doing ok, trouble is we will probably need a draw or win against Italy in the final game, a game they also need to win. should be interesting. Of course if Ukriane beat France . . . The english rugby team have inproved dramtically since the last RSA game, and the knockout style suits the...

Hey, Hertha were top of the table briefly but you seem to be on the slide. The insidious force for evil that is Bayern are on top as usual. When did Eintracht get back in the top division? They were really struggling the last time I noticed them. It is always difficult when you "only" need...

Ah well, tomorrow we have Ukraine at home and Georgia (the country, not the state) away on wednesday. Both pretty much must win games. Arneb, you must fancy your lot against the Oirish and Czech? Despite my pessimism Rangers are doing ok in the Champions League; as are Celtic, the only good thing ab...

18 is the legal age in Germany. Other than in the US, for example, the only restriction that applies until the age of 21 works in your favour: You can be judged according to juvenile penal law if the judge deems you to be too immature for someone of legal age. You're an adult at 16 in Scotland, tho...

There are 13 figures in Da Vinci's "Last Supper" thus proving John is Mary Magdalene and that Dan Brown is less than 6000 years old. Or something.
