Someone I know almost died once from a condition I don't quite understand. A measure that is supposed to prevent recurrence (I also don't quite understand this part) is to drink two gallons (7.6 litres) of water a day. One of the side effects of this treatment is quite predictable . . . Many patien...

Your love of Scotland, but not, apparently of the Scots, reminds me of an old song by Georg Kreisler: " Wie schön wäre Wien ohne Wiener " (How beatuful would Vienna be without the Viennese). 7 quid for a pack of fags? Good God. What a cruel, cold merciless country! Oh, Lianachan: Sorry, bu...

Once upon a time, a movie star

Kirk Douglas turns 95 today. F.A.Z. honours him with an album of memories. (The Caption reads: Once upon a time, a movie star. He is more than just the tough man with the strong muscles. He is the last witness of the classic studio era, a survivor in every respect: Kirk Douglas. The living legend tu...

Wow, you had to leave at 0600? That's tough. What did you become a lawyer for?

Best of luck getting back to you both. My guess would be with the weekend place, but of course, falling trees are unpredictable.

There is that. And I must say, I liked the intricate and beautiful design of the last generation of DM notes a lot better than the genereic, bland, featureless bridges-and-windows-through-the-ages stuff on the Euro.

Yes. That's exponential growth for you, I guess. I notice that the expansion in storage capacity seems to be abating a bit: Computers are switched from hard drives to SSL storage, and apparently, a sacrifice in capacity is willingly being made by the consumers because, really, what do you do with 25...

I know far less about computers than Lance, and even I remember those times. I bought my first 20 MB hard drive (for an Atari 1040 ST), from my former music teacher, in 1991. It was affectionately known among aficionados as the roaring shoe box, and set me back DM 100,--.

No Stalin Drive, Molotov Crescent or Beriya Underpass. I suppose German names are rare, too. They could do with a Stauffenbergstraat, though.
