Most of the streets in West Fife that are named after people are named after Labour Leaders or trade unionists. There is the odd Haig (the Man who won the War) but few others that are common elsewhere.
I haven't (yet) come accross a Zhukov (the Man who won the Other War).
In the heart of the Fife Coalfields in the early 1960s was built a new housing estate and they named one of the streets after the hero of the day: Yuri Gagarin. This may seem odd but the people and their elected representatives were every shade of red from mere Socialists to hard-line Trots and nami...
a) India has lobbied for entry, but does not border the Pacific ocean. The country has "observer" status this year. Will India be granted full membership? If so, is this the tip of the iceberg? Can we look forward to Iran, Turkey, France, Iceland, Morocco, and Angola eventually joining AP...
The Vosges are nice, we drove through there a few years ago. Weather is the problem, if it isn't going to be much better than here we would just stay in Scotland. Amsterdam/Bruge is a possibility, dependent on how it pans out. Hopefully we can re-arrange the main flights into next year and claim the...
Thanks, we have an appointment at the fracture clinic this afternoon when they will assess and almost certainly say she isn't up to the trip. We have resigned ourselves to not going as it would be very active and hectic and a non-starter with the Mem on one leg. We may spend the weeks in Crail on th...
One week to departure: walking into work this morning the Memsahib stumbled and thought she had twisted her ankle. A swift trip to Casualty later it turns out she has a broken ankle. Prognosis for recovery is very good, prognosis for reaching India on schedule, less so.
Rather startling (to me) was this statement: For establishing new businesses, Russia was ranked the worst country in the world to gain access to electricity. To successfully connect to an electricity source takes an average of 281 days, the report said. Worst in the world? Out of 183 countries, the...
At least they managed to keep 15 players on the field.
Time has a variable flow on a rugby pitch, it starts and stops at the referee's command and an 80 minute game doesn't end after 80 minutes. It gets quite existential.
...you start asking your colleagues if they still remember the GDR. I went to university in September 1989 with the plan to study Cold War relations. :D GDR and USSR were such a huge part of my life it seems odd that my nephew who started university this year wasn't born when the Wall came down. It...
Yes I bet the Welsh captain is kicking himself for that red card he got at the beginning of the game. Excellent leadership. The same pundits who are defending him here were calling for Umaga's head after his tackle on O'Driscoll in the Lions game a couple of years back. It could be a good final, Fr...

I have just browsed a couple of threads, the stupid, it burns . . .
