No more Manned Space Program?

Postby Lance » Sat Jul 09, 2011 1:11 pm

Really?

When I was a kid I could recite the Saturn 5 launch sequence by heart and new what every acronym meant and what their role was. I wish I still had time to follow the space program like that.

But does the U.S. _really_ no loner have a manned space program? We're turning it all over to the private sector?

If this is true it breaks my heart.

I think your country will still have one until a week from Wednesday. But there is still this, and also this.

Actually not sure if that was a serious response or not.

But, on a totally serious note, what is the US replacement plan these days? There is one, right?

Outsource it to the Russians. Until the Chinese come up to speed.

They'll probably can theirs the week after next (now that the yanks have canned theirs)

There is a school of thought that says that the Free Market is better at everything, always, all the time, and under any and all circumstances (a bit of reverse Communism, if you ask me; but that's not the point).

Let's see how it performs. My prediction would be the US will get her heavily state-driven space programs back, at tremendous cost, once other nations pull ahead. If she still can.

All you need to do to get the universal optimality of either a free market or communism is an appropriate definition of "better".

Mrs B was at a conference recently and got talking to the CEO of Virgin Galactic and was told she should apply to them for a job (not any of the one's listed on the website).

She is thinking about it, but not very seriously, which is a pity as I quite fancy being a kept man in Geneva . . .

I'd ask for a lot, I'm not sure how stable such a job would be.

In case she accepts, can we expect a nice Euroweasel invitation to Lac Léman?

Maybe it's Burt's old job? I hear they've been looking for another aerospace hobbyist since he retired?

I believe the Indians were also aspiring for manned missions, though a few years off, yet. Am I correct in the thought that ESA and JAXA have no plans for manned missions at this point?

This is my understanding, from the top of my head. Only three countries have ever sent anyone into space (counting Russia as the successor country of the Soviet Union) to date.

I concur. We used to buy tickets for the Shuttle and the Soyus, now only Soyus.

We'll be buying tickets with the Chinese in ten years time.

I am just concerned that with the end of the US manned space program, there will be a lot of secret Hollywood movie production folks out of work.

It wouldn't matter, this would be one last massive, pre-retiral, tax free, pension top up. :D

And yes, you will all be invited, if it happens.
