WTF KWH CFL ETC.

Postby Enzo » Fri May 12, 2017 12:32 am

SO they decided to get rid of incandescent bulbs. I guess I should call them lamps officially, but bulbs will do. Other than specialty bulbs like rough service or decorative types, the 100 watt are gone, I can still buy 60-40-25. But they came up with the CFL lamps. Those spiral (helix?) tubes on a screw in base. They seems to work well enough and I got a lot of light for less electricity. The last thing I am is an early adopter. But I got OK with CFLs. I bought "100 watt equivalent" CFLs, which used I forget, 23 watts maybe?

There are a FEW halogen bulbs. Like incandescents, but a little more efficient. But I think that is the hot filament folks just hanging on for dear life.

Of course LED lamps were coming along, but they cost like $50 for a damned bulb. They told me that over 30 years, the thing would save me X dollars on energy cost. OK, but I have to buy all 30 years worth up front. Hell, I;ll stick with the CFLs.

But I went to the store the other day... no CFLs to be seen! I looked all over, noted the LEDs had come down considerably, but was surprised that CFLs had been blown off the market that fast. Wide variety of LED lamps. And indeed a few cheap ones at lower wattage equivalent, like 40 watt. My 100 watt equivalent seems to work - makes light.

Technology is moving even faster than I thought.

Yep - 30 years goes by in a flash.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

If you are seeing an apparent paradox, that means you are missing something.

I like the LEDs. Nice, warmer spectrum than the CFLs.

However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

They seem to come in daylight which is bright white, and soft white, which is more yellow. Both LED and CFL have the choice. I prefer the harder white, myself.

Six months ago there was a selection of CFLs, today they are all gone.

Oh I don't doubt they are available, but I note all the Walmart options were sold through other companies.

Yes, I am looking mainly at one store, a large regional retailer directly competing with WalMArt stores.
