Shaken, not stirred

Story headline:
Quake split a tectonic plate in two, and geologists are shaken

Really? Shaken?

Oh well, it is still interesting, geomorphology and plate tectonics and all such are a major interest.

That's quite interesting... I understand how energy is stored in a subduction zone or transform plate boundary but the energy to BREAK a plate completely through must be, well, a lot.

Was thinking that. A definite time to be somewhere else.

perhaps we ought not look at it as an isolated event. A convection cell underneath could have been pushing up for millennia, the whole plate stretched atop. This was just the moment it all finally snapped. Rather than a cosmic event, it is just a continuing process.

The Atlantic basin is still spreading from the mid-ocean ridge, but the prognosis is that the Atlantic will eventually close up. The east side of the African plate is slowly breaking off piece by piece. India, Madgascar, and now the Great Rift is just the latest.
