I'll always remember jellyfish

Postby Enzo » Thu Jan 31, 2019 12:08 am

So we see ads all the time on TV for Prevagen, a memory enhancement product.

https://www.prevagen.com/about-prevagen/

Now the main ingredient "found in jellyfish" is the thing that does the job.

How long have jellyfish been known for their memory?

What leads them to this conclusion? I bet someone thought, "I wonder if I eat these jellyfish, if my memory will improve."

Only jellyfish I know are the ones we had in the Chesapeake Bay and they sting you. Then I guess you don't forget THAT.

I've often wondered the same thing about the development of _many_ pharmaceuticals.

"Gee, I wonder what will happen if I eat this slimy fungus from the anal hairs of this sloth?"

Someone here went to the aquarium, and saw the jellyfish. He told me the sign said that jellyfish have been around for 400 million years, and have no brain. So it reminded him of the organisation where he works.

I guess it is hard to forget anything if you have no brain.

And after all, sharks don't get cancer, so eating them must prevent it in humans.

Jellyfish are sticky aren't they? Do you see where I'm going with this?

Side rant: maybe we need to rename them 'jelly of the sea' in case anyone gets the wrong impression that they're actual fish, like starfish. Yes, and I thought sea-horses might be real horses, you know, like sea-monkeys.
I had this brought to my attention this morning seeing an article about 'sea-stars' and wondered why the push for that name. I was led to this quote, showing how smart National Geographic seems to think people actually are, seemingly not tongue-in-cheek:
'Marine scientists have undertaken the difficult task of replacing the beloved starfish’s common name with sea star because, well, the starfish is not a fish.'
Please, no one tell them about 'sun-dogs'. :glp-1doh1:

That really opens up a vent of tube worms. Catfish, dogfish, crayfish, the list goes on.

I bet you don't see those too often where you are.
Here they are too common for my tastes. :(

Yes.
I can only wish I were somewhere that jellyfish are common.
