Okay then

So why do we want to believe in these?

My calendar said Tuesday night, but now its says Wednesday morning. Does this mean you're speaking to me from the past?, or I'm speaking to you from the future?, or...

@_)(#_%)#&!&!!! Foreigners!

I suppose I could have said I was a voice from your past, though ... The possiblities for fun were ... erm ... numbered, I guess.

What were we discussing?

Whatever others want to believe

"For more on rods, visit Jose's web site at Roswell Rods.com "

"Be sure to visit the gift shop."

Should this be investigated? Yes, at reasonable cost.

Is it evidence of alien / interdimensional creatures (as opposed to fraud or optical/electronic glitches) ... VERY unlikely.

Why do we want to believe in these?

It seems reality is just too boring / frightening / not frightening enough for many people. We want ghosts, fairies, invisible rods, bigfoot, angels, gods, devils ... (sing along with me, you know the list, and it is legion.)

There are no more places on the map that say Here Be Dragons.
So I guess we have to place the non-mundane on the map of our imaginings.

I think everyone, deep down, would like to believe in extra-ordinary things.
How many people here would really be upset if tomorrow flying saucers, bigfoot, or ghosts were proved to exist?

I don't count myself in that number. WRT "extraordinary things", I am as cold a fish as can be. Reality has the uncanny knack of making itself known beyond belief.

Certainly, not I. As Mr. Spock would say, fascinating. Then science could go on to explain how and why. And Arneb ... that would then be the new reality. Just as a flat earth with lurking dragons at the edges was a few centuries ago.

I try to stay grounded in logic and scientific reality, but science must keep an open mind. And a bit of childlike wonder and curiosity in what might be. :)

^^^Ditto's KLA2.

And Arneb, in the immortal words of a fellow, well known surgeon: "You green blooded, inhuman, son of a..."(beep beep) Bridge to Capt. Kirk. :P

I really didn't want to downplay the importance of being curious and creative in the sciences. My point was that I am convinced that if something is real, better and better evidence of it will eventually be forthcoming, and it will make itself known. The UFO/ET stuff may have had some marginal credibility in the fifties, because, well, it's possible that the fifities happened to be the time when humans first encountered aliens; but if that were so, we wouldn't still see fuzzy, uninterpretable videos and bug-eyed believers telling stories of anal probing. We would have somthing nobody would have to believe in order for it to be true.

^^^Ditto to that too. But then I've always been the type to embrace tree huggers and gun nuts at the same time.
