Summertime... and the haiku comes easy

memorial day
oh to hang out drinking beer
the lawn awaits me

bittered ear of corn
on the cob - nature's handle
greasy moustache smile

baseball, nine innings
mom makes her warm apple pie
hot dog on a bun

hot dog with mustard
all is well in the world now
never with ketchup

do not yell at me
I will mow the lawn later
put a sock in it

I love the haiku
We do not have to rhyme it
And "orange" is OK.

If you really like haiku, I have a lovely book of haiku about Spam - the meat-like substance, not the email - called Spamku. Very good work. But it is just a sample of this fine art. Google up Spamku and start from there. Thousands and thousands of Spamku have been written.

In this misplaced thread,
The illuma-llama spoke.
I have made it so.

Must not be easy
Typing with hooves or big paws
Guess we are a zoo

counting all my blessings that
I am not a snake

As Arneb, the hare
I would at least have small paws
To stroke the keyboard.

As the seasons change
And it gets dark earlier
Summer has gone by

So you are a hare
That's neat, I just learned something
Beware of my cat

Well yes. Arneb, or al-Arnab in the original Arabic, means hare. Arneb is the star alpha leporis, the brightest (ha!) in the constellation Lepus, the hare . You find the constellation, a suitably dim one (ha!), due South of Orion. Sweet reference to the niockname my parents gave me. Anyway:

Cat? That little lap
Tiger of yours? Let her feel
The fearful hare's teeth!

And all this time I'd seen your screenname on both BAUT and sky charts and never made the connection. (Not that I'd be inclined to call a constellation having a magnitude 2.55 star "dim", although the vicinity of Orion and Sirius is a good place for a constellation to hide.) OK back to my cat...

Gray and long of fur

The other two do

Funny you say that about Arneb's relative brightness. I would have guessed it is far less than 2.5 It must be because I am in Germany and observing from 49° N, where anything at delta -20 ° is bound to look dim because of the proximity of the horizon.

Now that you mention it, the constellation was an easy one to make out from California and Hawai'i when I visited there in February. Brings to mind

Ah! Mauna Kea!
Holy place of old, and now
Astronomy's shrine.

Clock's ticking away
The long-feared pneumology
Exam looming large

(At 10:15 GMT tomorrow, to be precise)

Over 50 now?
Prostate exam soon to come
Big pain in the ass.

Had mine already
Used another finger then
"Second opinion"

Hope your pneumo is magnificent...

(Actually I didn't have my lungs examined, it was the qualifying exam for the title "pneumolgy specialist", but anyhow):

Bright the world now shines,
Though shrouded in winter's mist.
Because pass I did!
