I'll correct one thing: He doesn't live in NYC, he actually lives around California.

He's probably not in the desert, however, because he isn't wearing a hat and his hair's too long to make long hikes comfortable. His rifle looks like one of Browning's because of the vaguely triangular forearm and that groove in the side, possibly a BAR Shorttrac or Longtrac, both of which come in left handed models; his has iron sights on it. And he looks as I imagined that guy from The Road Virus short story by Stephen King.

Considering the image, he would have to use his left hand to draw his pistol, so I see this assumption.

Oh hell yeah! Dead spot on here! He uses motorcycles from time to time, but he mainly walks. Partly out of necessity.

Only reason I made it a "celebrity" was that to me it LOOKED like Neil Young. I can't speak for "everyone" else, I thought it was just me.
