The man who lived in Charles de Gaulle airport for almost two decades has died.

From my reading (I first became aware of his situation when he had only been in the airport for six years), it seems that at first, he was the victim of the bureaucracy of the European governments. But later, he became the victim of his own intransigence, having been offered the right to leave the airport and live in Europe, but refusing to acknowledge his Iranian nationality (he claimed to be British).

At one point, he filled out a form for the British government, and put his Iranian name on it, but it also had a space for an English name. So he put "Alfred", because he liked the way it sounded. The response came back, "Dear Sir Alfred", thus giving him a new nickname.

So it seems now Sir Alfred has left Charles de Gaulle airport for the last time.
They call me Mr Celsius!
