Insurrection in Brasilia

Postby Richard A » Sun Jan 08, 2023 10:19 pm

2 days after the 2nd anniversary of the storming of the US Capitol in an attempt to overturn the election of Joe Biden, the same thing is now happening in Brazil. Happily, newly inaugurated President Lula wasn't in town, but it's still alarming. And unlike January 6, 2021, the protestors are calling for the military to take over - and Lula himself is accusing the Federal District police of collusion.

Worrying times may be ahead.

One difference, Bolsonaro, now living in Florida, condemned the riot.

Did they riot when Brazil lost to Croatia?

He did, but only hours later. Raises the suspicion that, as is suspected of Trump, he bided his time to see if it would succeed. And there are reports of pro-Trump figures in the US having stoked the flames: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-64206484.

Although there's an interesting report by the BBC that says that for a lot of the rioters, it wasn't primarily about Bolsonaro; he's now "less relevant". They wanted the military to take over. Happily, though, the security forces have retaken the government buildings in order to restore them to Lula's government and have arrested the rioters. It looks like Brazil has, given its history and context, passed an important test.

That makes him at least a couple of years faster than Trump :)
