Presidential Rule Bending

In this thread, St. Jimmy wrote:I do think Bush is one of our dumber presidents, but I also think that he is a good guy, and if he were to bend the rules he wouldn't do any screwed up shit.

Then what is your opinion of President Bush "bending the rules" so the government can spy on American citizens? Don't you think that is "screwed up shit?

Do you honestly think there has been a presidency when the government hasn't spyed on american citizens?

quantify and qualify

many folks take a pen from work home with them. Not everyone embezzles a hundred thousand dollars a month.

There is fudging a bit, there is bending the rules a bit, then there is wholesale disregard for the rules.

If the speed limit through town is 35 and you go 40, they probably will overlook it. If you go 80, they shouldn't and won't.

Bending the rules during a war doesn't worry me too much. Lincoln practically shredded the constitution during the cival war, but the country survived. It's the chipping away here and there during peace time that worries me.

Technically we're still at war.

The president likes to say so, but upon whom did COngress declare war? If COngress doesn't declare war, we are not AT war...technically. A "war on terror" is pretty much like a "war on drugs" or a "war on poverty." If the Congress temporarily grants the office some "wartime powers," that isn't exactly the same as being "at war." Kinda like wearing a prom dress doesn't mean you're going to the prom.

Just because there's a dead mexican hooker in my closet does NOT mean that I went to Mexico last night.

Ah, the "technicallies"will certainly bog us down. Technically, we don't have a need for technicals.
