Snow White v The Supreme Court

Postby Enzo » Wed Aug 16, 2006 4:20 am

Oh someone recently found that more people can name the Seven Dwarves than can name the supreme court justices. ANd now we have to hear about that until something else distracts us. Mighty self-righteous proclamations will be made about the education system, etc etc.

What a crock.

Of course they know the Disney characters better. The membership of the Seven Dwarves hadn't changed in the last 50 years. Can the Supreme COurt say that?

While we learned them as kids, we also had our own kids who enjoyed them as well. That keeps thenm fresh in our minds. The Justices individually are not all that newsworthy much of the time. Clarence Thomas is an asshole, but how often does he get to demonstrate it?

And even if we all sit down and memorize their names today, how long will we remember them? Does it matter what their names are? We know the court is being stacked with as right wing a group as the President can muster. But what their names are? We don't vote for them, in fact we are not involved in their appointment. We can write our Senators, but they are appointed mostly one at a time and at that time they are in the news. Once put on the bench, we the people are out of their loop. If they destroy all our rights tomorrow, it still won't matter what their names are. Once they are in, we have no way to remove them.

I learned all the state capitals when I was in school, and to this day I like to quiz young people on them. But how often do I need to know the capital of Idaho? The only time it ever comes up is when someone is quizzing us on state capitals. After 50 years, I might forget a few.

Thus also the Supremes.

Just falling into the majority, here. :P I agree that we should have more say; the whole system is just too darn complicated. Same with the Electoral College.

But how often do I need to know the capital of Idaho?

Plus... y'know, there are only seven dwarves.

When I heard the report, I gave it a shot for myself. The current justices on the Supreme Court are (in no particular order):
1. John Roberts
2. Antonin Scalia
3. Clarence Thomas
4. David Souter
5. Antony Kennedy
6. Ruth Bader Ginsburg
7. Somuel Alito
8. Stephen Breyer
9. John Paul Stevens
I managed to get seven of them, but I couldn't remember:
Steven Breyer (I called him "William Brennan" for some reason) or John Paul Stevens
Now, Snow White's dwarfs are (in no particular order):
1. Sleepy
2. Dopey
3. Grumpy
4. Happy
5. Sneezy
6. Bashful
7. Doc
I remembered:
Sleepy, Dopey, and Doc. Then I went off into Comet, Eisenhower, Lord Randall...
I'm thinking that people would remember the Supreme Court justices a lot better if we only appointed folks to the bench whose names rhyme.

Heh, that reminds me...
Donner, Blitzen, Comet, Cupid, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Rudolph...
I think I'm leaving one out, and I feel bad about it because that would make the poor dear feel sad.

You're forgetting Olive. Gets a mention in the line "Olive, the other reindeer . . ."

I'll get my coat.
What‽ All this time I've been calling him "Nixon"!
I'm impressed that I misspelled a couple names of the Supreme Court justices, and no one's commented on it. I won't be typing up legal briefs anytime soon.

Well, you got one wrong Lance, its Donder not Donner. . .but close enough I suppose :)
In my hands I hold a candle whose flame is small to see, And if I give but one light to you my life is filled for me.
But...In your hands you hold a torch for many eyes to see, So hold it high that they may light their candlewicks from thee.

Maybe where I copied it from did... I copied and pasted that from the lyrics to the song. It's "Donner" everywhere I've seen. But regardless, I'm not making a case either way. It was Vixen that was the missing name earlier, and that was my point.

Apparently Donder and Blitzen mean Thunder and Lightning in German and that is how it was first written in 1844 or something.
I double checked it on google but I'm too lazy to put links. I searched Donder, reindeer and there's a whole slew of hits. Apparently its a quite a topic, I just like Donder better so I always say Donder is the correct and Donner is wrong. :)

The more I thought about it, I vaguely remember something about that... So I googled and found the stories as well.

This gives a good explanation of it: http://www.novareinna.com/festive/deer.html

But more importantly, can you remember the seven castaways?

The Castaways? Is that all? Man, I know their whole opening theme song! I sang it from memory in front of 200 people two years ago in the high-school lunch room!

John "Sneezy" Roberts
David "Happy" Souter
Anthony "Doc" Kennedy
Stephen "Icepick" Breyer
John Paul "Jonesy" Stevens

Well, I am a terrible American. I couldn't name all of the reindeer, SC justices, nor the castaways.

I can name all of the major characters and most of the actors from M*A*S*H (the tv series, not the movie), though:
Captain Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda)
Captain Trapper John MacIntyre (Will Rogers)
Lt. Colonel Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson)
    Major Frank Burns (Larry Linville)
Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Hoolihan (Loretta Swit)
Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reily (Gary Burghoff)
Lt. Father Mulcahey ( ? Christopher or Christopher ?)
Corporal/Sargeant Maxwell Q. Klinger (Jamie Farr)
    Captain B.J. Honeycutt (Mike Farrell)
Colonel Sherman T. Potter (Harry Morgan)
Major Charles Emerson-Winchester III (David Ogden Stiers)
So, where's my cookie?

I thought the German phrase was something like "Blitzen und grolen" for lightning and thunder...

I can vouch for that: some guys I know wanted to name their band "ThunderSludge" in German. I roughly translated it into "DonnerSchlamm" (Literally: "ThunderMud") for them.

Blitz is "flash of" and Blitzen is a "flash." Es blitzt translates into "it is lightening." So, Blitzen means Lightening.

Yarp. My German-English dictionary came in handy just now.

So "Donder" was likely the original typo?
