When to leave Iraq?

An adjuct to "Bridging the divide". Probably best to keep this simply as a poll with all discussion on that thread.

If I had my way, we'd stay there for half a century if it takes that long. And we'd take a heavier hand with the current Iraqi government. As it stands, I doubt we'll stay in significant numbers for more than another two years.

I'm not sure if the Democrats will withdraw soon or not. I think they sense that doing so will be disastrous, but not doing so will make them look no different from the Republicans.

Just a prediction, Iraq will never be a western style democracy, any
more than Saudi Arabia or Kuwait or Syria are. The foundation of
the troubles there are Sunni VS Shi'a, with the mix of Kurds in the
North who dislike both. Only a totalitarian state can control that
sort of a mix. Especially with Iran next door pumping lots of funds
to the Shi'a dominated government.

One way I do see us getting out is to call a conference of Gulf States
and let them put together a peacekeeping force to oversee Iraq for
the next 10 years. And yes, that means that we will have to have a
dialog with Iran. Of course, my scenario will never happen because
neither the Republicans nor the Democrats want to try that.
:glp-end: and always will be

Iran won't help us without demanding something in return, probably telling us to back off about their nuclear program.

Iran won't help us anyways. They have finally taken a step up, and I highly doubt they are about to step down.

Or maybe the answer is one year before the next election.

They might if it's in their interest to help us. Stabilizing Iraq isn't necessarily a "step down" for them.

But they have offered already.

Perhaps, but what were the intentions of doing so?

Their goal is to become a regional power. Stabilizing Iraq will give them tremendous credibility, and perpetual chaos on their border is not in their interests.

Agreed, and let us not forget that Iraq is a country that caused them a lot of problems back in the 1980s. . .
