Happy Birthday, India and Pakistan

Postby Мастер » Tue Aug 14, 2007 9:42 pm

60 years on, and still at odds. Just like Israel and Palestine.

I wonder what Iraq will be like in 2067?

Oh we can all look back fondly on the 6-decade war that kept going

Happy birthday, but no one mentions East Pakistan...

Do they celebrate independence from the British, or from Pakistan?

Pakistan, in the early 70s.

6 months to go for Sri Lanka.

DO they celebrate at all there?

Why visit the sea, when the sea will visit your house?

One thing they don't need in Bangla Desh is after dinner mints.

(anyone recall where that line came from?)

Apparently they do celeberate their independence in India, because one of my online friends called for a conference call with some guys in India today and was told no one was in the office.

That used to be a normal day in India :P

I think Enzo refers to Bangladesh, which pulled out of Pakistan (with Indian support) in 72 or 73, I think...

Oh. Thanks for the clarification. (I'm not really all that up on world history.)

Yes, unless I am confused, Bangladesh was once known as East Pakistan.

You are correct sir.

On Partition in 1947 East and West Pakistan were split from India giving one non-contiguous muslim state (Pakistan) and a predominantly hindu state (India). Ceylon was given independence in 1948, the delay being due to Navy and RAF bases on the island.

By the late 60s the differences between East and West Pakistan had become insurmountable. This was largely due to the government being based in the west and favouring (or being perceived to favour) the west at the expense of the east. There are also major ethnic and linguistic differences between the two areas. In the early 70s India provoked a war with Pakistan partly as a means of splitting the two parts, in consequence Bangladesh (Bangla = Bengali, desh = land) became a separate country.

Around the same time Ceylon renamed itself Sri Lanka (Beautiful Land).

Although it is often pointed out these days that there are more Muslims living in India than in Pakistan. Haven't checked the figures, but I would guess that would not be true if Pakistan still included Bangladesh.
