Death by vanity.

The mother of hip-hop mogul Kanye West died following a "cosmetic procedure" in Los Angeles this weekend, her publicist told CNN Monday.

West retired from her post as professor and chair of the English Department at Chicago State University in 2004 to become her son's manager, according to the Kanye West Foundation Web site.

Don't know who he is, but what a tragic waste her death is.

A professor and University chair. Could have contributed so much more. She was so much more than a pretty face. Yet died for vanity. :cry:

Guess she never understood where her beauty, and value, really was. :cry:

Olivia Goldsmith, author of "First Wives Club" and a whole lot of other funny books died during a surgery to correct her "turkey neck". Made me very angry, it did. But then, I hate the way my face is starting to sag, so I'm much less angry with her than I used to be, because I understand a lot better.

I heard about that, but didn't know about him (and really, I still don't) until I heard the bit about him on Carlos Mencia's show on Comedy Central. That was incredibly racist (as Mencia is), but really, really funny.

Apparently this Kanye West guy has an ego that puts most to shame.

Too bad about his mom, though. That seems pretty pointless, but it's not uncommon, from what I understand.

Kanye West is himself racist, anti-semitic and misogynist so can't really complain. It is a shame that his mother isn't as smart as you would expect though.

I hope so, too, KLA2. But aging, for women, is different, I think, than for men, because we seem to be judged by our looks so much more. But then, I don't mind my wrinkles and gray hair (I just color the hair and appreciate the fact that the wrinkles are more laugh-lines than frown-lines.) I hate the sag of the jawline. Hate it. And I suppose other women have some sign of aging they hate as well. I have to respect everyone's right to do as they wish with their own bodies--I just get so sad when I hear of a case like Ms. West's or Ms. Goldsmith's.

Yeah. I oversimplify and become arrogant/unrealistic/unreasonable.
Remember when we were ten years old, and everything was so simple and obvious? {Sigh}

When the world and I were young,
Just yesterday.
Live was such a simple game,
A child could play.
It was easy then to tell right from wrong.
Easy then to tell weak from strong.
When a man should stand and fight,
Or just go along.

But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.

I remember when the answers seemed so clear
We had never lived with doubt or tasted fear.
It was easy then to tell truth from lies
Selling out from compromise
Who to love and who to hate,
The foolish from the wise.

But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.

It was easy then to know what was fair
When to keep and when to share.
How much to protect your heart
And how much to care.

But today there is no day or night
Today there is no dark or light.
Today there is no black or white,
Only shades of gray.
Only shades of gray.

Not really all that sad, KLA2--I've just always been a very keen observer of human nature and the human condition. I don't remember a time when I wasn't much more aware of such things than other kids my age.

Oh, and growing up watching your parents struggle financially can help you with being older and wiser than your years, too.

Yeah, nothing is worn because it's never used.

Some lyrical similarities there.

"Shades of Grey" was a wonderful, lyrical, intelligent piece of music that like several others was dragged down in the vortex of the Monkees careers, (almost) never to resurface. :cry:

{edited to correct spelling of "Monkees". :oops: }

Yeah, I recognized that song. It was particularly poignant that they had Peter, with his less professional, less polished, more child-like voice to sing the lead on that one. I adore the Monkees.

Yes. They were hard-working, entertaining ... entertainers, shabbily treated at the end. {Even the Beatles did not play all the instruments on their recordings. Of course, they did play some of them :wink: }

It is sad that for so long, not only did the Monkees become pariahs, but by association, some fine music they performed. :cry:

Happily, their music seems to be making a bit of a comeback.
