RIP Sir Arthur C. Clarke

Postby pmcolt » Tue Mar 18, 2008 11:19 pm

AP is reporting that Arthur C. Clarke died this morning in Sri Lanka, at the age of 90.

A prolific science fiction writer and futurist. Clarke was the man behind 2001: A Space Odyssey, popularizing the idea of geosynchronous communication satellites, Clarke's law of magic, and more novels and short stories than I can count. I grew up reading his works alongside the works of the other legends of science fiction.

A sad loss. Among other great writers of science fact and fiction in the mid 20th century, he guided and helped shape my perception (and that of so many others) of science and what it might accomplish.

It has been said that, as a species, we are limited only by our imagination. Arthur C. Clarke unshackled our imaginations. He contributed much, all positive.

Yep, Clark and Azimov were what I grew up on; that and building models of Apollo, Soyuz, the moonlander. By the year 2000 we were all going to have personal jetpacks, live in cities in the clouds and wear cool silver suits . . .

I didn't care for his novels, but I don't deny his was a great mind. It is a loss.

I liked a lot of his stuff, certainly read a lot of it when I was young. ALong with Heinlein and the other names we all know.

But I just hated Rama. When I finished the first Rama book, I wanted to throw it across the room.

I liked the first Rama. Then came the sequels, to which he lent his name but which were written by one horrible author.

Let's just say, Enzo, if you didn't like the first volume, you would have thrown the other ones across the room. In pieces.

I do like most of his stuff. I felt Rama cheated on the ending - as in there wasn't one. I felt nothing was resolved. Here are all these wonders and mysteries, and... and... oh well, it flew away

BM65, that is a way cool tribute. I'm sure Arthur himself would feel honoured.

I cannot take credit for it. I saw it and thought of him, which is what I'm sure someone else did. Just says it all, doesn't it?

I did not think you created it. You found it, appreciated the significance, posted it. 8) TA has even adopted it as her avatar. Kudos! It does say it all.

{Geeze, Enzo, how do you get this guy to accept a compliment? Nail it to his back where he can't reach it to tear it off? :lol: }

Erm ... thanks, KLA2! Didn't mean to come off as rude - just didn't want anyone to think I could do such a thing, nor would I want to take credit for someone else's work.

And Enzo complimenting me? C'mon - does that SOUND like Enzo? Sheesh!

Of course, he'll probably meet me at the door on Friday with a loaded soldering iron now ... sigh ...

Fuckers. Both of you. Sir Clarke would banish you to some deep, dark corner of space, I'm sure.
