Rest In Peace: Bernie Mac.

Postby MM_Dandy » Sat Aug 09, 2008 10:58 pm

The comedian Bernie Mac has died at the age of 50 due to complications from pneumonia.

I've only seen parts of his act and maybe a handful of the television series, and that's enough for me to say that his passing surely does make the world a little bit less happy.

Long live the King.

Pneumonia? Don't hear about too many people dying of that these days.

Think again. It's the sixth leading cause of death in the US. Jim Henson, of Muppets fame, as another prominent victim, also dying in his fifties.

Well, yeah, but don't a lot of people who die of pneumonia also have some contributing factors? Either way. Sad.

Hayes was a Soul singer. But they always go in three, who's next?

Hayes was also a Scientologist who was happy to mock other religions but threw a strop when South Park had a go at Tom Cruise.

Absolutely. I suppose that, as a Scientologist, he wasn't a smoker. But knowing he little bugs can finish off an Operating Thetan or crap-whatever anytime they like is somewhat reassuring scientologywise.

I have a question, though. They said in a tv report that his pneumonia was unrelated to his sarcoidosis, but...wouldn't the damage from the sarcoidosis have made the pneumonia incredibly more dangerous?

Conceivably, yes. It would depend on how much chronic damage there was from his sarcoidosis (in successfilly treated patients, there frequently isn't any) and if he was currently on high dose immunosuppression. You could list those under the "contributing factors" you mentioned some posts up. On the other hand, it could all just be a coincidence. People do "just" die from pneumonia. I've seen it happen, and the ones I've seen weren't necessarily badly treated.

I'm sure that's true, but he's been on oxygen for a while, it seems, from reports in the media. So I'm guessing it was definitely a contributing factor.

yes, that sounds extremely suggestive. This situation is usually handled by phrases like "died from sequelae of" or"...complications of".

Mac was incredibly funny and cut to the chase in his act.

Never got to interview or meet him, but I sure wanted to. He was GOOD.
