So Heid, Lianachan, what about it?

I think we have a solid "Aye" vote on this forum; as for the general public I hope for the best but fear the worst.

Can the Catalans get one in first?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oc ... e-eu-spain

The article points out that membership of any new entity into the EU could be blocked by just one country - possibly Spain and UK (or whatever it is called after Scottish independence), for Catalonia and Scotland, respectively.

That is probably a point England will make in order to bring about a decision in GB's favour.

Then again, Scotland and Catalunya might team up with Switzerland and Norway to form the Eureopean Élite, and how would we like that down here?

If people were more aware of the full picture, it would be a no brainer. Unfortunately, the media is relentlessly pro-union and they cheerfully endorse the lies and misinformation that's spread about by the unionist political parties and groups. There is absolutely no case whatsoever that can be made for maintaining the union, but people seem to be falling for the scare stories and nonsense, and the unswervingly negative tactics of the unionists.

Anyway, they will win because they will cheat - as they always have done.

Well, here's to hoping it doesn't end up like Northern Ireland . . .

Here's an example of the kind of media bias the pro-independence side faces, and this is from the BBC - which is bound to impartiality by its charter!

Heid - any thoughts on what, post Scottish independence, the rest of what's left of the UK should call itself?

Remainder of the United Kingdom (RUK) ?
Former United Kingdom (FUK)?

I think we've got to go with FUK. How could one do better than that?

That's good. I've noticed that some people get annoyed when I call it Poofistan.

It's already fairly easy to spot the UKers while waiting in the immigration queue, they're clutching passports with more writing on the cover than anyone else - United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Scotland was the only non-English component that was a "separate" kingdom, which became united, right? So "United Kingdom of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland" doesn't seem quite appropriate. Maybe, "Welsh, English, and Northern Irish Kingdom", or WENIK. So people from this territory could be WENIKers.

It gets quite complicated. An Act of Union in England and an Act of Union in Scotland joined the two kingdoms together to form a united kingdom called "Great Britain". Later, Ireland and "Great Britain" had their own union. I'll leave it up to the lawyers to decide what the impact of the dissolution of the English/Scottish acts of union has on the Irish/British ones.

Hmm, the situation is indeed more complicated than I realised. It could still be a "united" kingdom, because of Ireland (still not sure about Wales), even if Scotland grants the other constituent countries independence.

But WENIK and WENIKer would still work.

Wales, for our purposes, can be considered a part of England. Regarding Ireland, it signed up to a union with a country which would no longer exist come The Glorious Day - so what happens to that union? I neither know nor care!

Hopefully WENIK and WENIKer will still be valid once the dust settles.

And Ireland no longer exists, the unoccupied 26 counties having gone south last century.

This is the main question of Scotland and the EU, NATO etc. do we inherit the rights and obligations of the UK?

Yes, the solution to that (as I have just learned at the U. of Wikipedia) was to redefine the union to include a new government on a part of the territory occupied by the previous government. So I guess the same solution could be applied in this case.

I would be mildly amused if the union could evolve over time to eventually include none of its original territory. So if the monarchs inherited Naples and Belarus, but lost England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, we could just have the United Kingdom of Naples and Belarus. Or would it be the United Kingdom of Belarus and Naples? The law judges could still wear those wigs either way.

Not being from around there, and not particularly aware of the situation, I hope this is not an ignorant question - but, is the referendum binding in any way?

I guess the UK was created by act of parliament (and maybe some agreement by a previously autonomous government of Scotland?), so would an act of parliament be required to end it? (There is no provision in UK law for secession, is there?)

There is also the battlefield option, I guess.

The Scottish and UK Governments have signed the Edinburgh Agreement, which states that the outcome will be respected. It doesn't look like Britain can be trusted, though. Mind you, we should all know that by now.

Hopefully it won't come to the battlefield option. They'll cheat us out of it one way or another before it gets to that.

Is there any comparable movement in Wales?

It would be a bit funny if the only piece of the UK remaining (besides England) were the part they don't want, over the little sea there.
