Re: On to the Scottish referendum

I am utterly devastated, and almost feel in shock. For the first time in my life, I am embarrassed to be Scottish. The country I was born in and had loved has announced to the world that it's not really a country after all. Right now, I am disgusted at the place and feel countryless - never British, and for me now there's no such thing as Scottish. I doubt I'll even be able to support the football team (assuming FIFA allow it to continue).

Hey, Tubes - how's the job situation in New Zealand? There's nothing for me here now, and spending the rest of my life upside down sounds fun.

Be happy to have you as an honorary kiwi Lianachan.

Re; the job prospects, there's lots of building and engineering type jobs in Christchurch (apparently), and they haven't had any big quakes there for a couple of years now (touch wood).

Auckland is the big smoke if you like sprawl, and can afford the house prices. Plus there's a big china-town sector there now which adds diversity to the place. Auckland University has a really good Archaeology Department (that's where I did my 1st degree) specialising in polynesian pre-history/archaeology, and good in physical anthropology in general.

For me personally, Wellington's the place to be if you don't mind the odd earthquake now and again. Capital city, great public transport system, a couple of decent universities (Vic Uni has a good law school and earth sciences faculty) generally okay employment prospects. Most importantly that's where the Surf Daddies are at. :-)

So even the Highlands vote no. Yes, resounding is the word that comes to mind.

Bummer. There's also the possibility that the Labour (I think?) party will force Cameron to reneg on his promises for more devolution, which may disenfranchise enough "No" Scots to swing a relatively soonish future vote.

The promises NO made have already evaporated. What a massive fucking surprise. I hope all of those idiots who voted no are prepared for the consequences for North Britain. Meanwhile, both Russian and American observers have claimed that the vote was rigged.

I haven't looked at the news today because I would be reduced to violence, one of the reasons I'm out of the country.

The Tories will say either:
Claim any promises were the No campaign and not them, or claim Cameron made the promises without authority and knife him in the back. Yes, we're looking at you Boris.

Pro-union rioting in Glasgow City centre tonight, complete with the burning of Scotland flags. I'd hate to think how the British would have reacted to losing the vote, if this is how they win.

Bored of flag burning, they have now torched the offices of the only Scottish newspaper that was pro-yes. Oh, and stabbed a 15 year old kid in the street, and assaulted many others.

It doesn't matter now, but had the referendum succeeded, and if Scotland were on the path to independence now, would it likely have continued to remain in the fUK Commonwealth?

Probably, no reason to leave.

Elsewhere, the Government and BBC made great play that any shipbuilding yards in an independent Scotland would not be eligible for naval contracts. Seems they might not be eligible now anyway.

Down the road from here they are about to start on the RN's second aircraft carrier. Which they are touting as initially having helicopters. What they fail to mention is that that is because the F35 is an overbudget piece of shit that can't do anything it is supposed to. It's main function seems to be to burn through money and developers' promises. They will cost somewhere about eleventybillion pounds each and perform no rôle satisfactorily.

I suspect it might be cheaper to buy off the enemy than to pay for the planes.

Worked well enough for Rome, that. We think that's how a pile of Roman coins ended up at a site near my home that I was digging at this year.

Had some interesting chats with Dr Fraser Hunter (grand fromage at the dig) about the significance, value and use of such things to a native culture that didn't use currency. Not interesting here though, so I'll spare you the details.

Nope, that one is in Englandistan and I think the coins in it are mostly modern. The coolest and oldest one that I can think of round these parts is on this island.
