Re; the job prospects, there's lots of building and engineering type jobs in Christchurch (apparently), and they haven't had any big quakes there for a couple of years now (touch wood).
Auckland is the big smoke if you like sprawl, and can afford the house prices. Plus there's a big china-town sector there now which adds diversity to the place. Auckland University has a really good Archaeology Department (that's where I did my 1st degree) specialising in polynesian pre-history/archaeology, and good in physical anthropology in general.
For me personally, Wellington's the place to be if you don't mind the odd earthquake now and again. Capital city, great public transport system, a couple of decent universities (Vic Uni has a good law school and earth sciences faculty) generally okay employment prospects. Most importantly that's where the Surf Daddies are at.
