Edward Snowden @ Glasgow University

Postby Lianachan » Tue Jan 21, 2014 3:29 pm

Apparently, Edward Snowden is standing as a candidate for Student Rector at Glasgow University. Hope they've hidden their whistles, or it could get noisy.
A-nis bidh fios aig daoine nuair a tha mi a 'mionnachadh aig dhaibh.

I assume eastern Euroweasels can't vote for him.

I would imagine you have to be a student there. You can always ask/enroll though.

Hmm. Should I apply under "International Students" are "Mature Students"?

I assume "mature" means "old". If it actually means "mature", . . .

Unless you want to move to Glasgow, which is probably a bit much for the sake of the vote, you'd probably have to register for some sort of distance learning. If they even do that, I'm not sure. I'm sorry, but you may have to come to terms with being unable to vote.

I have just checked who the Rectors of Edinburgh were when I was there:
1988 Muriel Gray
1991 Donnie Munro
1994 Malcolm Macleod
I know who two of them are, and have no recollection of them being Rectors.
Get it up ye.

Angry shouty man disagrees.

Whether they are fine young people or naive it is the job of students to do things that make old men angry.

When I saw the result, I was wondering - what's the point? He'll never visit the Uni, it's just a political statement.

But of course:

That is the point, and it's a fine political statement.

I'm not sure how often previous Rectors have visited, I seem to recall Nelson Mandela was Rector there while in pokey. Glasgow Uni does have previous for this kind of thing.

That said I'm sure an IT contractor can use Teh Interwebz to talk to another country, even if only to send pictures of kittens falling off tables.

I thought it was Winnie Mandela, while she should have been in pokey. Still, the net result is the same either way.

You are quite right, Stompie Moeketsi and all that.

Still for every Johnny Ball they have a Mordechai Vanunu, who waas certainly banged up at the time and may still be for all I know.

Eww - some proper arseholes in the list of Glasgow Uni rectors*. Also some sterling fellows, though.

*Including one relative of mine.

Ross Kemp and others lower the tone, I can take a guess at the relative . . .

Vanunu has been out for about a decade though under draconian terms. Funny how they'll kill other peoples nuclear workers but not their own. I would have put money on him commiting suicide.

Edit to add: The first part of our list is pretty grim reading though Alistair Sim and James Robertson Justice brighten it up.

That's him in. He didn't appear in person, perhaps unsurprisingly.

I'm sure he'll do a fine job as a powerless figurehead. It does continue to make old men angry, which is still good.

So what does a Cyber Rector do? Would you call it Cyberrectormy? Or maybe Cyberectomy? (taking the 'rse out of it, so to speak)

Really? They're going to offer him his own Asylum?

Better than going mad in Putin's Russia I guess.

Probably just a first step to reclaiming his kingdom in the hilly part of Wales. I have no problem with him going to Scotland.
