I came across this today and it is one of the few times I actually agree with anonymity in a court process. Short version is that there is a 36 yo woman with learning difficulties living in the community with a long term partner who also has learning difficulties. She has had six children, can't care for any of them, and they are all in care. If she becomes pregnant again it is likely the child will die and possible she will. To protect her and any (as yet unconceived) future children the court has ordered that she be sterilised. Given such a draconian decision I do not want to imagine how bleak the circumstances are, but it looks like everyone from her doctors, social workers, carers etc. all agree this is the best course. This is not unique but it is certainly unusual.

There was a case in Scotland a while back which I was peripherally involved in with the same result, though no children were involved, it was an autistic woman who could no longer stay on birth control for medical reasons.

At the risk of diminishing a very serious subject, I have to ask: is that said like the North American counterpart to a gherkin? And I must add that I once had a cat named "Pickles."

For those playing along outside the UK, we have no statute of limitations for any crimes. There are obvious evidential issues for historic crimes but no time bar.

I suppose when trial by media is the best you can get, it's better than nothing.

They can have a trial, he just won't be present and won't suffer any punishment. He can't be found guilty as he can't present a defence but the court can say he did it. The Crown Prosecution Service binned the case but have been forced to prosecute after an appeal.

There are also calls for a fresh evaluation of his mental capacity, there is a suspicion he has the same type of dementia Pinochet had. If he is faking it at least he knows how tarnished his reputation is, even if he doesn't end up in pokey.

How very queer, one of the missing files which was given to Leon Brittan, then Home Secretary, to investigate appears to have accused that very same Leon Brittan! As yet they are refusing to draw any conclusions to why it might have gone missing.

It should be noted that Leon Brittan was a close personal friend of the second judge appointed to head the enquiry, not that she saw that as a problem.
