Somalia now has its first ATM!

Although it's really only the first if you don't count the breakaway province of Somaliland, as they already have some there.

BTW, when did you start ATMing? I remember my parents gave me a free giro acoount when I turned 16, and I used my first stop at the ATM to impress a girl by drawing money and inviting her for pizza. Must have been in '85, and I remember ATMs had just been introduced as a broadly available commodity maybe a year or two earlier.

I don't think I could really say for sure when, but I suspect probably a year or two before you. At least in the US, where I was living at the time, though, it was a long time before you could really count on inter-bank operability.

In the mid-1990s, I had better success getting cash out of machines in a small, impoverished Caribbean country, than I did in one of the western states of the US.

1978. I started working for RBS so at the age of 16 I had a proper current account with chequebook and cards. Their ATM network was the most extensive in the UK at the time and had about 50 machines. I don't think there was any interbank connectivity.
