Oh, sure... Have someone we trust tell us they checked and there's nothing going on. Uh huh. What a way to keep the cover-up going.

When Trump originally announced his candidacy no one took him seriously. When he started showing strength in the polls it was a joke, not really how people will actually vote. Once he won a few primaries it was attributed to the dilution of the 65% who didn't vote for him, across too large a field of competitors.

But now that we are down to just three other contenders and Trump basically wiped the floor with them on "Super Tuesday" (11 state primaries at the same time), the Republican party is having a genuine Grand Old Freak Out. GOP leaders past and present are all coming out denouncing Trump and trying to figure out how to keep him from winning the nomination.

It's kind of funny. They didn't worry about him until it was too late to do anything. American Democracy in action!

I feel so much better now...

There was a GOP debate tonight, now just concluded. But during the course of it, Donald Trump assured us that his penis is of more than adequate size.

I guess he is qualified to be the Leader of the Free World after all.

Maybe he can get that job, if he doesn't become president of the United States.

The gitmo prisoners are in US control, but not on US soil. That is their value for the place.

Understood, but how the conclusion follows that they are in a law-free zone is rather lost on me. If the US do not recognise their own sovereignty over Gitmo, ought they not to recognise Cuba's?

Is this some kind of general principle? Can Americans be captured by some country who then hold them in a military base outside of their own country, so that the prisoners are outside the protection of the laws of any country, and also not covered by the Geneva conventions?

The law is as slippery as they want to make it. We have a lease of some sort, though the Cubans protest. So it is rental property, not US territory. It is ours to use, and apparently ours to not apply US law to. If I rented a cabin in Canada, US law would not apply to me when I was there.

We wanted to be able to torture prisoners without breaking US law doing it. We also were rendering prisoners to other places torture was not outlawed like Romania or some such. The UN and rest of the world considers this a crime.

I assure you, if you were to attempt to open a bank account in Canada, you would very quickly discover that US law does apply to you there. But on other matters, I expect that if you murdered someone in your rental property in Canada, you would not have violated US law; you would have violated Canadian law. My untrained legal mind expects that the same principle ought to apply; if US doesn't apply in Gitmo, because it's not part of the US, then it must be part of Cuba, where Cuban law applies . . .

Donald Trump makes The Economist's list of top ten global risks.

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-35828747

From the article:

He is rated as riskier than Britain leaving the European Union or an armed clash in the South China Sea.

From what I gather it will be Hillary to take on (and probably beat) whoever the Republicans choose at their brokered convention. Is that the consensus in the US?

Yes, but there is a Republican also-ran that could spoil things. John Kasich, the governor of Ohio, is in distant third place in the Republican race. But the polls show he is the only one that could beat Hillary in a head to head competition. So the question looms: will the republicans ever figure that out?

I am quite convinced that they will steadfastly ignore this fact and sail onward to the abyss with a steely look of disdain on their faces - disdain of all things that don't live up to their ideological purity. How ironic that this is quite the same way that Labour are anniilating themselves at the moment.
