About what? Germany pushing away the United States/Kingdom? It's regrettable that it's come to that, but 1) it's not Germany's fault, and 2) you'll be fine. Having sensible partners in the US and UK would help, but I think Germany is strong enough to lead and succeed despite the fact that we seem to be lead by poorly-written cartoon villains.

1) I just wanted to imitate the Donald's "bad, very bad" thing
2) We still get free security from Uncle Sam, so the Donald withdrawing into his shell is no trivial thing for me. We cannot really afford a cartoon character in that spot, not that one.

Although this is no trivial thing, I am tending more and more to think it might be a good thing.

Germany alone has considerable population and economic resources, and is able to develop a formidable defence capability all by itself, should it decide to do so. Add in France, and then it's that much more so. Add in the rest of western Europe, and there is the ability to develop a defence force that would be able to handle any reasonable near-term to medium-term threat. It requires only the willingness to do so. Russia is a pale shadow of the Soviet Union.

This is a case where I actually find myself in agreement with the Great Orange One. He wants the Nato countries all to meet the target of 2% of GDP on defence spending, but I'm not sure he's going to like the result if he gets his way. Although the defence may be "free" in terms of money, it definitely comes with a cost. Do you like being in the position of having to support Donald Trump so that he will continue to provide defence for you? I think I'd rather just pay the money . . .

That is all quite true. But to develop a defence capability all on our own will be very costly in terms of personnel, time, and money. And of course it is a very comfortable position to have the country with the highes defence spending in the world garuanteeing your security. Being a politically weak economic powerhouse, militarily cozy yet unassailable, able to afford no draft and telling everyone how to solve conflicts peacefully is SUCH a comfortable position, you know. Also, I can't quite find it a good prospect for Germany to become a stron military power again. It sounds ver wrong to me. Remember how Margaret Thatcher was telling everyone we would invade everyone else again as soon as we would re-unify? I'd hate to see those fears come up again, and I'd hate them to be true even less.

I guess it's a reasonable strategy to wait out four years and trust America to not make the same mistake twice.
