Another craze run its course?

Postby Enzo » Sat Aug 05, 2017 2:04 pm

I watch food trends, hey, I like food. I remember when oat bran had to be in everything. Antioxidants became hip. Arugula came along and demanded to be in everything, in fact it never left. For a while brussels sprouts could not be left out of a meal. Yuk. Then kale took over the spot light. I dislike kale, I had to eat it growing up, it is crappy greens poor people ate after WW2. Then it gentrified and kale had to be in everything. Acai berryies took over. Now the absolute latest thing is the fried egg. Now we cannot cook anything without sliding a fried egg on top of it. A hamburger? Slap an egg on it. A pork chop? add an egg. Hey, I like eggs, but can't a chef make up a menu without an egg sliding off the top of half the entrees?

meanwhile my own theory is that when a food trend makes it to McDonald's, it has run its course. And just a few days ago, I see McDonald's has added kale to their menu. Hopefully it will now fade away. No more kale chips in the snack aisle. No more quinoa with kale - in the handy steamer pouch - in the frozen aisle. Kale freaking smoothies, for god's sake.

Now I will wait...

There is a similar but opposite trend too; the one where things are bad for you. Eggs were bad for you for a while, but now they're good and healthy again. Beef was too. I can't wait for gluten to go back to just being a protein.

So all the eggs I ate back when they were bad, were they still bad for me, or are they now good? Is the change retroactive?

Here, at the right time of year, you can get a McRamadan meal.

That's a good question. I don't know. I think it is just our understanding of a thing that changes, not its nature. But I could be wrong.

I actually think a fried egg on top of a burger is an improvement on the all too common bland slice of cheese. (Blue cheese, now that's another matter!) But I see your point.

As for food being bad for you, again, know what you mean. Reminds me of the height of the BSE scare (remember that?). Italy banned the traditional fried tripe beloved of Sicilians as it was believed to carry a high BSE risk. So what did they do - moved the stalls to the back streets!

He'll disagree about the blue cheese.

Fried egg on burgers have been around way longer than the fried egg on top o' everything, though. I agree w/ the burger, i't's good. Pork chops? not so much.

And the kale thing? I saw a meme on facebook that I really liked - it showed a frying pan w/kale in it, captioned "Pro tip - add coconut oil to your kale. It makes it much easier to slide out of the pan and into the trash".

Around here, kale - Günkohl - is not a new thing. It goes very well with baked goose for St. Martin and Christmas, and out Northern parts have Grünkohl mit Pinkel, which is a total outrage and NOT cooked for health reasons:

You sir, are my hero.

I am OK with an egg on something, I just get tired of it when every chef thinks everything he cooks is elevated to gourmet status by slapping on on top of something.

McRamadan, I love it. I wonder if there is a market around college campuses for McRamen.

So no Kohlfahrten for Arneb, then?

Lobster Thermidor au Crevette with a Mornay sauce served in the Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy, with a fried egg on top and spam.

In Edinburgh it tends to be a poached egg on top, broken open so you can see the yolk is still runny.

Well, I had greek salad and grilled what is called 'bavarian double smoked sausage' last night. I also thought the kale fried in butter didn't look too healthy. ;)

Kale fried in butter is probably better than some other things fried in butter though.

Let them (Llamas) eat Kale!

I can't stomach it.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

If you are seeing an apparent paradox, that means you are missing something.
