RIP Sean Hughes. Probably unknown to most here, but he was a great comedian and writer, and by all accounts a decent sort.

Yes, I saw him live once and he was very good. Far too young.

Though at one point he seems to have been a bit of an arse.

Ach, everybody is an arsehole to some extent.

True, I'd be surprised if I were described any other way.

This isn't your gaff, is it? Wonderful view of the castle.

Not mine, no. I can't think where it is, it must be south eastish of the castle since that is the Esplanade and Half Moon Battery.

Is it a genuine photo? I know I am overthinking it but I can't think of a run down concrete building in that location. The view is from Greyfriars Church/the new Museum* area.

*New in this case means 1998.

I suspect it's a photoshop, and the view does indeed look like it's from somewhere around the "new" museum.

ETA: Bit of detective work reveals that it's fake. The photo of the castle was taken from the roof of the museum on the 5th of March 2012, by somebody called Kim Traynor.

It had to be from somewhere near there and at that height. Central Edinburgh has very, very few buildings that run down, it would have been turned into a hotel or coffeeshop, particularly with that view.

Edit to add: As a comparitor this photo from near my gaff includes both the Castle and Chateau Heid, the former being much more prominent.

Edit to add 2: If you scan west to here the dull grey streak on the far side of the Forth is Dunfermline, where I currently sit.

Ah, cool. Panning a bit to the left, it also (presumably) includes the current Chateau Lianachan Jnr Dun Lianachan Beag - currently studenting in Embra.

I tried turning my internet sleuthing skills to the provenance of the foreground component of that image, but when I'd expended the same amount of effort as required to investigate the background (less than a minute), I packed it in.

That does include a lot of areas, some better than others.

Given the rendition of May I suspect it is English.

Internet sleuthing complete. The foreground is a composite. The room is in Pripyat, the mural is here and the graffiti is here.

I thought about going to Pripyat last week, but I didn’t go.

Or Rerik, for the view. Or Potsdam, for that matter.
