RIP Art Bell

Postby Enzo » Sat Apr 14, 2018 6:25 pm

Master of the paranormal on AM radio, Art Bell, dead at 72.

I used to listen to his show driving around at night. He was on like midnight to 5AM "Coast to Coast". He always lent an uncritical ear to any paranormal claim. Moon landing hoax, face on Mars, Chemtrails, ancient aliens, whatever. But in my mind he was not hostile to non-believers. I kinda liked the guy in spite of himself.

I enjoyed his show too. It always helped if you were in a fringe reception area and would lose reception when he was talking about some gov't type conspiracy.
That's going to leave a big hole in the over-night AM schedule.

I am a long time DXer on the AM radio, and he was on so many stations that if one faded out, I could find him on another and continue to listen.

I liked George Noory less. Bell was always the good host, and would be supportive of his guest and credulous to the claims made. It was interesting when the next night's guest had some premise that was contradictory to the previous night guest. Yet Art soldiered on supportive of the guest du jur.

On his web site there was a port to send messages to them in the studio while they were live, sometimes Bell would pass them along on the air. I remember whenever he had Richard C Hoagland on, I'd send him this after a half hour or so: "Hoagland overload, tuning to music station."

I thought Geroge Noory had pretty well filled that hole already.

Yes you are correct. I've been out of the loop for awhile. ;)
My friend that doesn't go to sleep without having 'coast to coast' on the radio informed me that Art hadn't really been on much for about 15 years now.
Time flies.

Noory just sounds like a generic radio host to me. He lacks the concern and empathy for the guests that Bell had. He could be doing the farm report tomorrow.
