Windrush

This is featuring strongly in the news and social media over here just now - the plight of the "Windrush children".

In a nutshell, these are the children of Caribbean people who were encouraged to emigrate into the UK in the decades after the second world war, to help rebuild the country. The children came over with them when very young, and now our xenophobic, racist government is trying to throw them out, classing them as illegal immigrants. They've helpfully published a guide for those being thrown out: Coming Home to Jamaica.

It features statements like "Deportation is not a sentence or punishment but a second chance to build a new life and make a meaningful contribution to build the nation", and tips like "Try to be ‘Jamaican’ – use local accents and dialect (overseas accents can attract unwanted attention)".

Coupled with all the "Russian spy" nerve agent bollocks and the illegal bombing of Syria, plus Brexit simmering in the background (presumably - it's disappeared from the news), I'm struggling to think of a time when I was more ashamed to be (technically) British, or thought it was more urgent that we get our country back and away from those hate-filled fucks as soon as possible.

It's not often political parties make good on the promises they make in order to get into power, but at least the Tories are finally doing what they said they'd do in this old newspaper advert.
