WTF is going on in Venezuela?

Whose side should I be on?

As much as I hate being in one camp with Donald Trump, root for Guaidó. Maduro is a ruthless, corrupt pseudo-Socialist who came to power as the dirty deeds man of another corrupt, ruthless caudillo, Hugo Chávez.

It is of course a problem that the current gouvernmentt originally took over, in free, fair, equal and secret elections, from a right-wing Fuck the Poor gouvernment. That's why a lot of people trust them more than they would trust any opposition, despite the current gouverrnment having practically eclipsed Venezuela's economy. Venzuela's, which could be about as rich as Norway but ranks about as high as Albania and Indonesia.

They both seem dodgy to me.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

If you are seeing an apparent paradox, that means you are missing something.

Remember back when people wanted to leave Colombia to live the good life in Venezuela?

I do, but now that I am in Donald Trump's camp I get the irresistable itch to say, so what, they're all shithole countries anyway.

Maduro's Venezuela reminds me of a quote about the original Caudillo, Franco: "he was a political and military genius but an economic imbecile". Maduro is certainly no political genius - although maintaining the level of support he has in the economic disaster zone that Venezuela takes some doing - but the real problems come from the fact that he doesn't have any economic competence and has consistently failed to appoint ministers who do. But let us be clear what Guaido is calling for: a US-backed military coup. He originally called for a popular uprising against Maduro, but that failed to materialise, at least to the extent needed to defeat the government - and like it or not, Maduro remains for the time being the government. So he has instead looked to Trump to help him. What does that tell us about what his policies will be once installed.

Colombia, on the other hand, has emerged from being a "shithole country" to being a Latin American success story - an economy that works to a reasonable extent, overseen by a government that does not have complete disregard for anyone but the rich.

Isn't it ironic that Donald Trump the Isoloationis, the fierce get-out-of-the-Middle-East, let-them-sort-it-out-alone anti-statebuilder, is now seriosuly pondering an invasion in Venezuela in order to promote Freedom and Democracy? Oh my, people tend to get interventionist with that kind of military at their disposal.
