You know how a new government has a get out of jail free card where they can blame stuff on the previous administration for a while? Biden has the best one of those in history.

First step FUMIGATE the whole WHite House.

SO far today, from different directions: My sister told us all, Biden won't survive more than a few weeks and Harris will be president. I heard the exact same story from a resident right-wingnut on another forum. Also that Biden is senile, and just a "puppet".

As a bystander citizen in a tiny island nation pimple of the butt-end of the world, I'm personally delighted at the outcome. May Biden live longer and prosper

I've never cared that much for Biden, except for when it came to Trump. That being said, I wish him all the best.

Well even if Biden somehow doesn't last a full term, he's given his 75+ million voters (and a few billion onlookers world-wide) a cause to celebrate the end of Trump's term.

:glp-s301:

Maybe that will be legacy enough. As a bonus, Biden may live longer and deliver some of his pledges. If not, Harris will get an chance to test her mettle.

Either way, I hope they both last long enough between them so Trump can't find a way back. Trump's divisive presidency has been an ordeal of despair that the rest of humanity could do little but try to endure.

That seems like the best possible outcome to me. There will be no unity in any case and McConnell will logjam everything in the senate. In four years time it will be just as fractious.

I’m curious as to why people think Biden won’t last more than a few weeks. He seems fairly healthy (bikes, lifts weights, etc.), so where does this prediction come from? I have to admit I’m coming from the same position as MM Dandy (the memes about Biden and Obama were Musichuk more impressive to me), but I’m not overly impressed with a lot of politicians, so take that as you will.

A few weeks seems rather hyperbolic.

Eight years, though? I looked up life expectancy tables from the social security administration, which suggest the probability of Joe Biden being with us eight years from now at not too much over 50%.

Now, he does seem a lot more active and in better shape than many people who are 78, so maybe his personal odds are better. On the other hand, he just got a really stressful job.

And when people get old and die, there’s often a long period of decline. So what are the odds that Biden will make it even four years? Fairly good, I think, but the chances that he won’t are non-negligible.

So I think his VP choice is more important than it is for most US presidents.

Following up - I suppose "a few weeks" might refer to the possibility that someone who was vice-president (a very different job than being president) four years ago, and has been doing whatever he has been doing for the last four years, and who is about to turn 78 years old, may step into the presidency, and say, "what have I gotten myself into?", and be unable to keep pace with the job.

So not so much that he would actually die, but that he would quickly burn out, and say, "I can't do this".

I guess we'll find out whether that's what actually happens or not.

I doubt it. Campaigns are arduous, and he has stood up well. Besides, Popes do it all the time.

It is my recollection he wasn't ever enthusiastic about a second term anyway. He seems to see himself as a transional figure. And yes, he was conspicuous about his choice of running mate. My bet is he will give Harris oversight of important projects so she can test her mettle and give her time in the limelight. After a successful "double Presidency", the plan would be to present her as the logical Presidential candidate to avoid a painful primary, as in '16. Then she would have maybe two full terms as President in her own right.

I think this ould pan out. Biden does not seem to be the attention whore Trump is, and he knows he is not the shining public figure Obama was. He could do his reconciliation thing, pass a few key legislative and personnel projects over Harris' desk (for her to knead Collins and Romney for key Senate votes) and go down in history as The Man Who Healed America and graciously stood aside having helped put the first female President on track. That wouldn't be a bad legacy at all for a one-term Presicency. And he could enjoy a few years as a beloved ex-Prez as an extra instead of just barely making it past the finish line at 86.

Am I the only one who things it's likely that the way Biden will unite the US is with a good ol'fashioned war? Must be somewhere in the Middle-east that's due an invasion for hoarding America's oil, surely.

We can fix the Senate in 2 years. And if Georgia does the right thing, we can fix it in 2 months.

Right; I see him as a one-term president as well. Hopefully we won’t return to Trumpland after that. Two terms? Maybe, but I think that’s a long shot.

I doubt we’ll end up in a war of our making; I think we’ll see deal-making all over the globe to help pull economies up and mitigate the damage autocrats currently in power can do to the rest of us.

It comes from Fox News. They have been thumping the "old and frail" thing all along. They tout the it was Harris all along conspiracy. They have ads for Trump showing a compilation of Biden moments where he stumbled on a word or had a vacant look on his face as evidence he is demented and senile.

Fuck Fox News: they’ve done more to destabilize the US than Russia could’ve ever hoped to.

That's how a lot of us felt. There was a meme going round, "When you ask for Coke and they ask, 'is Pepsi OK?'" I always responded, "Given that the alternative was Mountain Dew, Pepsi will do." Happily sufficient numbers of progressives seem to have worked that out.

...and Merka delivered, like she used to. I'm flabbergasted that something went good twice in a row. I hope it's not an ill omen for Nov., 2022.
