Could you give a kind of "English-ish" transliteration (or tell me the pronounciation rules, so I can figure it out myself), I'd love to memorize that one.

So an article about Germany’s sudden increase in the military budget.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60549916

Here is the funny part.

Within a few days Vladimir Putin has managed to do what Nato allies have spent years trying to achieve: a massive increase of military spending in Germany.

Also, NATO has been looking for a reason to exist for 30 years. Now there is one.

They should give Putin an award. Who has done more in recent years for NATO than he has?

Was that a Russian AN-225 in Ukraine for maintenance?

It was the one AN 225 in existence, and it was a Ukranian plane.

They've been building a second one for as long as anyone can remember.

Russian army does not seem to be performing well here. They still haven't accomplished their day one objectives. I saw someone who commented, when you've been planning an invasion for a year, and your forces run out of food and fuel on the second day . . .

Here is something about the size of the forces needed to occupy Ukraine.

https://english.alarabiya.net/News/worl ... ng-Analyst

For comparison, it is noted that the occupying forces in Germany in 1945 had 89.3 troops per one thousand inhabitants. For Bosnia in 1995, it was 17.5 per thousand, for Kosovo in 2000, it was 19.3 per thousand, and in East Timor, it was 9.8 per thousand.

At 3.4 Russian soldiers per thousand Ukrainians, their force is rather on the low side, although the Americans tried to occupy Afghanistan with even fewer per thousand. That didn't work very well.

And the invading army's performance seems at times comically inept. We have video of tanks running out of fuel, Russian soldiers not knowing where they are, where they are going, etc.

https://www.vice.com/en/article/m7vx43/ ... erformance

Previous operations in Ukraine, and also in Syria, were conducted largely by special forces; this one is mainly general conscripts.

What happens to this long convoy approaching Kyiv will be rather telling. I have seen conflicting opinions on this - some say the fact that it hasn't been stopped is a really bad sign for Ukraine, whereas others recall what happened in Grozny during the first war with such a convoy.

And then we have the possibility that Lukashenko may have accidentally divulged plans to invade Moldova.

Part of Moldova is already invaded, and has been for years.

For someone who rode into the presidency on his performance in the second Chechen war (bombing the shit out of Grozny), this is quite a turnaround.

Thanks for sharing that.

Yes, things don't seem to be going according to plan in Uncle Volodya's Small Specific Special Operation to Support the Valiant Donbass Republics against Drug-Addicted Fascists Gouverning Against the People in Kiev. I admit I underestimated Ukraine's ability to defend herself, and overestimated the amount of competence in the Russian military planning, and I am happy I did.

This is certainly a disaster for Russia, but I am not sure yet if it's a disaster for Putin. Putin's utter disregard for the wellbeing of Russians when in pursuit of his world historic role is not new, and it is likely that both Russia and Ukraine have a lot of pain ahead of them before this is over, and when it's over, it's unsure whether anyting good will come of it. In the short term, the development will mean more shelling of cities, more vacuum bombs, more civilian deaths, more destruction of infrastructure, probably a targeted annihilation of cultural assets in Ukraine. There is no Ukraine. There is only Russia Minor, and you Little Russians will now return to the Mother Russia, as you had done, had you not been under the sway of drug-addicted Fascists.

The suffering will be immense.

Germany seizes $600 million yacht belonging to a kremlin-connected individual.

So now Germany has to maintain it.

How long before they give it back?

The Hamburg authorities have denied it was seized. But it has been ordered to remain in port. So, no nice spring cruise across the North Sea for the owner, but maintenance is still on him :p

I saw one suggestion that the EU could end the conflict immediately.

Simply grant citizenship in an EU country to any Russian soldier who deserts.

That reminds me of the old joke about the FSB officer saying, "I know you guys don't care about yourselves, but how can you do this to your poor parents?"

I’ve seen that a few times, always suggested by USians who wouldn’t have to pay for it.

It would probably work almost as well if the US offered them citizenship. Or at least a green card. They could move to Brighton Beach instead of Cyprus.

And besides, it wouldn’t cost that much. 150,000 involved, not all of them would defect. The US has over three hundred million people, the EU has what, still over five hundred million?

The main issue would be the incentives. Would Russians rush to join the army, hoping there might be another such offer in the future?

And it could be privatised, charities could run it. Adopt a Russian deserter!

I’ve seen one Russian’s reaction to certain news. He’s a fairly frequent poster at one forum, a highly sarcastic critic of the Russian regime, and a bit of a clown.

So he described his reaction when he learned Ukrainian men were taking their wives to the border, then returning to Ukraine to fight. His reaction - pure joy.

He then had a photo montage of his apartment in Moscow, showing all the places where he could host Ukrainian refugee women.
