I hope the good citizens of Belgorod get the fire at the oil depot under control before somebody gets seriously hurt. Goodness knows the Ukrainians have had a lot on their plate with mass bombings, civilian deaths and all manner of fires in every conceivable type of facility causing all sorts of pandemonium.
A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

Well I think it likely people have already been seriously hurt there, a phenomenon that has also been quite common recently in regions to the south and west of Belgorod.

But in any event, here is something.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putin_khuylo!

Note in particular the last paragraph under "Origin". The fictional president of Ukraine who makes the comment is now the actual president of Ukraine.

So is that the real reason for the invasion?

I'd say that they have been deliberately and consciously been misinformed. I bet you'd have to go a long way to find accurate information about the biggest disaster the USSR was responsible for in today's Russia. Sure, there may be an aspect of Young, Stupid And Thinks He's Immortal about it; but given the fact many of the soldiers were kept in the dark about the fact that this was not a drill and they were actually in Ukraine says a lot.

I’ve heard internet chatter (who knows how reliable) that young people in Russia have never heard of the Chernobyl disaster.

I'm sure they haven't. Putin is a true servant of the Soviet Union and will not have encouraged information that made it look bad.

But then, Russia is not alone. I remember, in 2004, teaching on a summer school (here in the UK) for students from a Japanese university. One of them said to me that he'd recently visited China, but hadn't enjoyed it - people there didn't seem to like Japanese. His next line, though, took the cake: "I don't know why they don't like us - I don't know what we ever did to them." No, he didn't know; they don't teach that stuff in Japan.

So I guess the point of this is, Germany hasn’t updated much since the 1940s?

No, it means we shuffle over the museum pieces to Ukraine, instead of up-to-date stuff.

Can't see the number on this, but we know which ship it is. And the words. (see above)

Also, I want to point out that you used the equivalent of the Du-form, which is a bit rude if you do not know the ship well. «Идите на хуй» would be more polite.

I'm not sure the polite form goes with the sentiment, does it? I'm pretty sure that the form Arneb used was the one the Ukrainian defenders used. Though the vy form would have been appropriate if it had been directed at the crew rather than the ship itself. (As Mactep will confirm, the Russian approach in these things is similar to the French rather than the German one: there is no equivalent of "ihr".

The English-language Wikipedia page, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_w ... k_yourself, makes me think Arneb’s form was the original, but note that (at least as of the time of this post) the Russian is spelled incorrectly at the Wikipedia page.

I am French-impaired, but the Russian polite “you” is the same as the plural “you” (so that, in plural, polite and familiar forms are the same). Contrasted with German, in which a polite “you” is the same as “they” (except always capitalised). I do have a book in which the polite “you” form in German used is the same as the plural “you” form (so “Seid Ihr” instead of “Sind Sie”) - I suppose this was deliberate, to give the book an old-fashioned sound?

It's the same in French: "vous" doubles up as singular (polite) and plural (polite and familiar). There is no equivalent of "ihr".

OK, I think I probably looked at the building photo on my phone, and the right side was cut off.

Now I am on my computer, and I can see the whole thing.

Someone is at fault here. Some software developer. They should іди на хуй (I do hope that is correct Ukrainian).

But in any event, now that I can see the whole thing, I would say it is the Ukrainian version, word for word, of what Arneb posted in Russian, with one exception - it says "Russian ship", not "Russian warship".

I think Ukrainian verb conjugation is similar to Russian (I got that far in Ukrainian class before dropping out), so I would say it is also in the "familiar" rather than the "polite" form.

Wow, it even has an American-style asterisk in order to avoid spelling out the dirty word: Russian ship, go to the d*ck. Now that is what I call good manners.
