Strange word usage, I have seen it on CNN several times.

They routinely say that Putin, or Russia, claim to have illegally annexed Ukrainian territories.

I don’t think Putin is claiming the annexation is illegal.

The interesting question is not, where does this leave Lukashenko and Kadyrov, but rather, where does it leave Krasnoselsky? At one point, it looked like Russian forces would sweep across the south of Ukraine, taking Odessa and pushing on west to connect with Transnistria. That hasn't happened, making Transnistria's bid to join Luhansk and Donetsk in reuniting with Russia a lot less viable.

Perhaps seeking some sort of settlement?

And he is right about that.

Should we ask why the Soviet Union was facing German tanks in 1941, and why Russia is facing them today? Or is that not a polite question? Like asking Germans what they did during the war, or Russians how they made their first million?

German troops, even if not tanks, formed part of a UN force in Kosovo. The Serbs of course pointed out that they'd seen German troops in Yugoslavia before, but much of the rest of the world (although Putin, who also sent troops, but to bolster the Serbs) recognised that the circumstances were rather different.

I don’t have any serious issue with what you are saying, but I do want to mention that until part way through 1999, Putin was best known as the person who carried Sobchak’s briefcase.

Which is why Russia only deployed troops in Kosovo, not in Bosnia or Croatia. By the time Putin moved to higher things than carrying briefcases, Dayton was done and dusted, but Kosovo was still going on. When I went to what was then Macedonia (now North Macedonia) in May 1997, tensions in Kosovo were growing, but it hadn't exploded into all out war yet. Also, one can be sure that as Yeltsin's health continued to decline in the late 1990s, Putin's influence will have been growing even before the world noticed.
