Dammit, this was supposed to have quoted Tubes.

I think when Arneb talks about range he means the actor is most famous for playing a completely different character from the kindly uncle (or whatever) he is in the photo. It looks to me like Bruno Ganz (or Brünö Gänz if you want it in German) who played Hitler in Downfall.

Bah, autocorrect keeps taking the umlauts out, and changing the case of the "d" in Downfall.

It is indeed Bruno Ganz, whose name is written entirely without umlaut, and yes, I was talking about the Hitler role. I really didn't recognize him.

The photo is from a new film adaptation of Johanny Spyri's mid-19th century cheesy children's novel, Heidi. Ganz plays the Alm-Öhi, Heidi's grandpa. This book was made into a cartoon series in the 70s (one of the few things I really watched consistently) by a Japanese studio. Alpine World, almond eyes, Manga esthetics (although kid-friendly). It was eery.

On to you, Heid.

Continuing the playing against type/broad range theme: in which film was this apartment block home to an actress famous now for a completely different type of character.

In the film the tree isn't there and the film is in black and white, even though it is from the 1960s.

As that is a fairly anonymous apartment block a further clue: the lead actor is better known for his work in another field even though he starred in a number of films.

Her first films were in the 1940s, still working in tv in this century, still alive.

The male lead was born just across the Hudson River.

Home to an actress, or home to her son? (That is, her son in the film, not in real life.)

Frank Sinatra, Angela Lansbury, but I thought the apartment belonged to Laurence Harvey.

I think you are correct, it is the son's apartment. Apologies.

So, the film would be The Manchurian Candidate. I knew the director. Before he died.

This was the shooting location, but in the film, it was supposed to be a completely different place, quite far away.

Wow, that's cool. He did a nice line in Cold War paranoia.

That has been in a lot of things, but nothing I can think of where it isn't itself. If you know what I mean.
