So why is it acceptable to work at a number from the left end, but not the right end?

Why not guess from both ends?

Ok, I am really confused now...

You asked if the number is even, I said thats for you to figure out, am I missing something else?

The last number is odd

Then let me explain, as I think there must be some miscommunication here.

Suppose a number takes values from 0 to 32767. Then this number can be represented as a 15 digit binary number. Now, if someone comes along and guesses 16636, and you answer either "lower" or "higher," you have effectively told that person whether the first digit (the left-most) is a 0 or a 1. If I come along and ask if this number is even or odd, and you answer, then you have told me whether the last digit (the right-most) is a 0 or a 1. So my question was, why is it OK to ask a question whose answer effectively tells us the left-most digit, but not one whose answer effectively tells us the right-most digit. You then said "Why not guess from both ends?" which I interpreted to mean the left end and the right end. But I think you must have meant something different, I'm just not sure what.

Ok I see what you mean, but as people guess correct digits from any point I fill them in, so you can get it right from any point really by guessing.

Okay here we go, I randomly pulled a credit card out of my wallet, now guess the number. It has 16 digits, with expiration date 01/08.

**** **** **** ****

Okay now seriously, I wrote a program that provided me with a random (as possible) hexadecimal(0-F) number with 8 digits.

You did read that i was kidding about the 16 digit number, right?

We are on to an 8 digit hexadecimal number lower than 74693520 with rightmost bit 0.

Whoops, nope, I didn't. I just went back as far as the post about 16 digits, I was thinking it was stupid to put your credit card number up, I should have known then to look farther.
