In my lifetime, I will never find humour in that, or a few other events.

Not criticizing you, Arneb.

Just saying.

You are of course right, KLA2. On the other hand, isn't that an apt description of the attitude that caused the disaster? Grim humour, yes, but inappropriate? I don't think so.

Following through with your argument, when are "famous last words ever really funny?

You are right, Arneb. That is why I said I was not criticizing you. Just one of those things that punches my buttons. :(

To me, the gallows humour in "famous last words" is in the irony, that the person speaking should have known better or took a stupid chance.

In the case of the Challenger, the stupid chance was taken by the NASA administrators who, despite urgent warnings, threw the dice with the lives of the crew. The crew lost. If the administrators had died instead, then those "last words" might be funnier.

Yes, I think that we can agree on. I saw a documentary where they told the story a Northrop Grumman engineer violently trying to stop the launch because he foresaw, that exact problem. I quote from memory, but they really said to him, "you are going to stop our launch because of what? No way!"
It was harrowing. He expected the explosion on the launch pad and was just starting to breathe easier, when...

Reminds me of the " five big lies of the doctors":

1. "I'll be right with you!"
2. "What, do you think I'm doing this for the first time?"
3. "You will hardly feel a thing"
4. "It'll be over in a minute"
5. "You'll be fine"
