Seriously, it seems to me that they are thought of similarly to the way many eastern Europeans think of gypsies. But I've never lived on Great Britain or Ireland (well, I kind of passed through at a very young age when I was in a transitional state), so I'm not completely sure whether that's an appropriate analogy. . .
