Gaah, I hadn't realised Tubes's post was the clue. Willy Wonka.

Same here, and I would have ventured the same answer.

Sounds like something that someone would script for some movie with Peter O'Toole in it.

Not Peter O'Toole. It stars a Cockney and an Egyptian as Germans.

So Michael Caine played a German in The Eagle Has Landed, but I don't remember Omar Sharif being in it.

Some movie about a man who would be a king?

I don't think Omar Sharif was in that, it was Caine and Connery. And they weren't Germans. It is a fine film full of wonderful quotes, many of which I use, but not this one.

I think I saw this years ago, but can't remember what it's called. Thirty Years War sort of period.

God's Holy Trousers!

He could slaughter his enemies like a civilised man.

So we're onto another Sean Connery flick?

No, that is just Mactep and I going off on a tangent.

The quote is: "God? There is no God. He died at Magdeburg."

The film is set in the Thirty Years War, stars Michael Caine and Omar Sharif. It ends badly for everyone and isn't great for most of them all the way through. Like the Thirty Years War.

Wasn't that about Richard III and all that? War of the Roses and all that? (Or was that a different war?)

The War of the Roses was during the 100 years war. Which was 116 years, 1337-1453. Mostly England v France.

The Thirty Year's war was much later, 1618-1648, and was also a much more continental affair. Germany suffered quite badly during this one.

And if you are Dutch the Thirty Years War is the last part of the Eighty Years War.

Germany did suffer very badly, there was a particularly unpleasant siege of Magdeburg, as mentioned in the quote. I tried to set this up as a "Location, location, location" question but that area of Austria is no longer covered by streetview.

It's quite frustrating, as I'm pretty sure know the film and have seen it - I just can't remember what it's bloody called. It's on the tip of my eyes, so to speak.
