So, I'm tutoring some Seventh Graders. (One is Dear Jimmy's sister, but she doesn't need the help. She pretends to just to hang out with me.) These kids aren't grasping the concept of "Scientific Method." I just can't bang into their heads that it's an ordered process of answering a question.

Then again, they just don't care.

Tie your examples into a video game or something. RPGs like Legend of Zelda always make you do certain steps before you can do other stuff. Make it fun and kids eat it up.

Yes, you must connect to their interests. Otherwise, as you said, they don't care.

Or you could always try :ut-sm:

I'm sorry umop, but you were assassinated by your use of the word "winner".

Thanks for playing.

Better luck next time.

They're girls, and not too into videogames. Except Jimmy's sister, but she doesn't need to be tutored; she just wants to hang out; not stupid, just lazy. Must run in the family.

I've tried to work it into volleyball and shopping and even tried giving them memory tricks. Nope. They start to giggle and talk about how one was holding hands with some boy through a whole movie in the theater. (No, James, it wasn't your sister who did it. Don't go killing.) Yeah. I don't know. I kinda just want kids who want to learn and just aren't quite getting it.

It's fun to help Jimmy with mols for his chemistry class though. Mols were always fun, and Jimmy LIKES math, so it was all enjoyable. Then Jimmy did crossword puzzles in class.

I guess I just need to find some sort of process that gets them motivated. I just don't know what, though.

Ideas?

Unfortunately, in high school, there are always those who simply don't care. I am not sure there is anything you can do to get them interested because they would never be interested.

But maybe you can try to get the attention of those who could care by telling them some of the interesting stories that have happened in science. Since you are trying to teach them the scientific method, maybe you could describe some of the more important experimental breakthroughs and walk them through the steps of the scientific method as you describe the experiments.

Spray and pray is not a very clean or efficient method of offing your target, Teri.

If they don't want to try, they won't try, o hippie one. Their interests may not include good grades and basic understanding of the subject.

Very true, oh colt one. Their moms were ones that signed them up for tutoring in the first place.

I could never be a teacher. Nope. Never.

Its a great way to hit a target! There is a greater chance of occaisionally hitting some innocent bystander but hey, they stepped out their door this morning! They assumed the risk of interacting in society! 8)

Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet, machine guns ready to go

Are you ready? Are you ready for this? Are you hanging on the edge of your seat?

Out of the doorway the bullits rip, to the sound of the beat, yeah

(Thump, thump, thump)

Another obne bites the dust. . .
