IIRC during the 1st world war, that the opposing sides did play some sport (reading 'between the lines' of your comment ;-) ) or something of the sort in the story about the xmas of 1914. But usually its allies who play sport in the down-time periods between combat AFAICT.

Actually, I was referring to this:

On Sunday, 28 June 1914, at approximately 1:15 pm, Franz Ferdinand and his wife were killed in Sarajevo, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina, by Gavrilo Princip, 19 at the time, a member of Young Bosnia and one of a group of assassins organized by the Black Hand.[4] The event led to a chain of events that eventually triggered World War I.

Treaties and alligiances like falling dominoes triggered WWI.

Not quite that simple, I know.

My (considerate) daughter gave me a 'complete history' book of WWI for my birthday a couple of years ago which goes into all the imperial arms race history preceding the conflict (as well as the legacy of the war and the great depression and rise of nazism). The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was virtually a pretext for the impending imperial aggression and war-mongering that had been brewing for some time AFAICT on my 2nd or 3rd reading of the tome.

I don't think so! The circumstances of Mactep's early life were a by-product of the second world war, a couple of decades after it ended. Mactep was not around to start either one.

Um, this thread is becoming a Gordian Knot.

Mactep, perhaps go back a page and read the posts. If I inadvertantly gave offence, sorry. :?
