Anyway... The year 565 CE saw the first reported sighting of our old friend the Loch Ness Monster, it is commonly claimed. However, the beastie was described as being in the river, not the loch, and was one of several strange beasts that Colm Cille (St Columba, mentioned in my earlier entry!) was described as admonishing. Clearly an attempt by the writer, his hagiographer, to demonstrate to the Picts that look! our God and his buddies are able to command your old water spirit gods around!. The next reported sighting of the Loch Ness Monster was in 1933, in a known faked photograph in an attempt to defraud a newspaper. So, in the Scottish Highlands - where there is a tradition of water beasties, and old tales of them are well known in song and verse, there is absolutely nothing about a monster in Loch Ness. It is, in fact, noteworthy because of it. A chap from England was based in Inverness (at the top of Loch Ness) in the 1720's and he wrote home to a friend in London about his experiences and what the place was like. He was careful to relate many tales of witchcraft, folklore and weirdness from all over the Highlands... but what does he have to say about a monster in Loch Ness? Precisely nothing, and I know, because I've just finished reading all of his letters. Draw your own conclusions.....
