KV 626, the Requiem in D Minor, is Mozart's last work, left unfinished. It is in the Mount Everest class of music (which I talked about a few years ago), of the deepest spiritual wisdom and of mind-blowing musical complexity and beauty. In my mind, it paints the unususal image of a God who is actually evil, an unyielding and cruel enemy to the poor souls who are subject to his wrath.
I had the great pleasure of singing this once, under the direction of a very, very good conductor - we sang one of the edited and completed versions, but not the usual one (Süßmayer), which is rather weak, but a new one by a muusicologist named Robert Levin.
