U-609, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Klaus Rudloff, was sunk on 6 February 1943 in the North Atlantic in position 54.56N, 28.11W, by depth charges from the Free French corvette Lobelia. 47 dead (all hands lost).

That's excellent, really like that. I love old railway lines. A section of a 73 mile walk in the Highlands is on the track bed of a railway line that was closed in the 1930's and which I'd been researching.

"Rails to trails" is a thing all over the USA. And 611 is the number of a restored Norfolk and Western Class J passenger steam locomotive.

Of course, the photo crops itself losing teh locomotive part. It is there if you open in a new tab, or go to the web site.

which brings us to 613. And that's a fact.

No 621 Squadron was formed at Port Reitz, Kenya on 12 September 1943 as a general reconnaissance unit and began to receive Wellingtons a few days later. On 19 September, a detachment began operating from Mogadishu in the former Italian colony of Somaliland, which on 4 November was joined by the squadron headquaters. The squadron's patrol area covered the approaches to the Red sea, but Aden was found to be a more suitable base for the squadron, detachments being based on the Arabian coast and in Somaliland to cover a wider area. Patrols continued until the end of the war, when the squadron was moved to Egypt and began converting to Warwicks. These were flown on air-sea rescue duties, being supplemented by Lancasters in April 1946. Conversion to the latter type had just been completed when No.621 was renumbered No.18 Squadron on 1 September 1946.

The Heraclius' campaign of 622, erroneously also known as the Battle of Issus, was a major campaign in the Byzantine–Sassanid War of 602–628 by emperor Heraclius that culminated in a crushing Byzantine victory in Anatolia. According to this Wiki article.

... - sorry for doing a twofer here, this is important to me:

KV 626, the Requiem in D Minor, is Mozart's last work, left unfinished. It is in the Mount Everest class of music (which I talked about a few years ago), of the deepest spiritual wisdom and of mind-blowing musical complexity and beauty. In my mind, it paints the unususal image of a God who is actually evil, an unyielding and cruel enemy to the poor souls who are subject to his wrath.

I had the great pleasure of singing this once, under the direction of a very, very good conductor - we sang one of the edited and completed versions, but not the usual one (Süßmayer), which is rather weak, but a new one by a muusicologist named Robert Levin. This is it.

1405hrs, NW of Cape Ortegal, outbound: British Liberator FL963 (224 Sqn RAF/J, pilot S/L P.J. Cundy, DFC) dropped 18 35lb A/S bombs on an initial attack run (the first use of this new weapon), then followed up with four depth charges. Survivors were seen in the water after U-628 sank, but none were rescued. Despite flak hits to a fuel tank and the fin, rudder and starboard wing, the aircraft returned to St. Eval to make a safe landing.
