I rewatched it recently, prompted by a scene from Mad Dogs which seemed too similar to be accidental (I took it as an homage). Probably would not have got it without further clueage, otherwise.

Not nearly as controversially -> what was filmed here?

Nope.

Clue the first - it's not set there, but a lot of it was filmed there, both inside and outside.

(Edited afterthought - that's more additional info than a clue, actually)

(Yet further editing - since it's Friday, here's a Rob Roy location for you. Also, when I was a wee laddie, I was in that exact same place while filming for an episode of a Sherlock Holmes series was taking place. We gave one of the actors a lift back to his hotel, and he was disappointed that I (aged about 9) didn't know who he was - but I present Blue Peter! he even said. Still no idea who he was. )

OK, I guess the other obvious option is Braveheart. But that sounds more like a film Enzo would have chosen.

Medievally, yes. Robin Hood - no. The main character is somebody who enjoys a similar amount of actual-real-person-in-history-ness, though.

Ivanhoe?

A mate of mine has just finished writing a book on Robin Hood and the competing historical and ahistorical claims drove him nuts. Fortunately it isn't an academic book, so he just held his nose and took the money.

Not Ivanhoe. Yes, I think your mate did about the only sensible thing possible there. This particular quasihistorical character has quite a lot of mumbo-jumbo written about him and has been the subject of several films. The location in question featured extensively in what was undoubtedly the least serious of them (and the film title doesn't contain his name).

Yup, that's the one. Well worth a visit, Doune Castle. I was there a few months ago. It's got a good history in it's own right, it's astonishingly well preserved and there's an audio guide to take round there that was recorded by Terry Jones. He gives you the straight history of the place and each bit of the castle, in his usual interesting and witty way, but in most parts of the castle you're invited to press a button to hear what Monty Python filming took place there, with suitable anecdotes and recollections. Get yourself there!

And a book in the same series my mate is writing for. He finds it entertaining that Robin Hood and Arthur are lumped in with Norse and 'gypo gods. They are entertaining enough but I wouldn't pay for them.

Annoys the shit out of me when people refer to the Norse, or Roman or whatever, Gods as myths or legends. Different systems of belief from our modern religions, but an extremely important part of how vast numbers of people lived their lives. Also, they were no more ridiculous (I'd say slightly less so) than any modern religion.

(Scottish tangent - I was in Edinburgh yesterday, at Heriot-Watt again, so, err... Hello)

Next for shaving. The film is not set in this city.
