No offence intended, and if any taken, my sincere apologies.

Arneb, the accent of the local "germans" (mennonites) here is very different than that. ;)
They speak Plautdietsch, though many (like my father) can also read proper high German.

Well yes, but their forbears spoke a strong dialect to begin with. Some German dialects are very melodious, and of course, they are now used to speaking English (aren't they?).

Many speak very poor broken english. Others weave back and forth between plautdietsch and english.
Really, they have very little in the way of ties with Germany, only ties to the written language. The fact that they are referred to here as "Germans" is misleading. They did originate in German speaking countries though.

Do you know any resources on the net where I could hear them speak? I'd love to hear that sound.

They’re not big fans of the internet :) But others may have recorded them.

I'm not sure if you mean the accented english or the low german, so here's some of each.
low german (plautdietsch) as spoken around my area:

a guy poking fun at the accented english and mannerisms of the area mennonites, it's quite accurate:

OH! Yeah! It was in that one a couple of years ago, but civil rights or something. You probably want more though.

Off-topic, but its interesting when you pan the camera around and see how close those buildings are to the waterway margin. I guess inundation wasn't much of a consideration when the building footprints were laid out.

Got no idea what film(s) that bridge has been in. More clues?

It has a largely black cast, composed mainly of the black sidekicks in cop shows. We watched it going: "Oh, it's Bunk from the Wire", "There's Gabriel from Southern Lady Detective", "What was he in? NYPD Blue . . ." and so on.

As Llance said, only a couple of years ago.
