Hmm, then the second graph could average height, the first one the mean difference between the tallest and smallest, say, 10 percent. China is ethnically homogenous, and its perople aren't tall, Scandinavians are the tallest perople in the world, on average, and their variations are somehere in the middle, and so on

Also, I believe these can be easily manipulated to increase the size and in some cases are surgically reduced for aesthetic reasons.
